CITIZENS’ ACADEMY APPLICANTS SOUGHT BY NEW HAVEN POLICE

(3/16/2009) NEW HAVEN—The New Haven Police Department (NHPD) is currently seeking applicants for its popular Citizens’ Academy (CA), which will begin on April 15th for eight consecutive Wednesday evenings from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. Approximately 25 local residents will be selected to participate in the program designed to improve communication and understanding between the police and community members. Applicants selected will have a unique opportunity to work with officers and look behind the scenes of a progressive, community-minded police department.

Applications for seats in the New Haven Police Citizens’ Academy class are available between 9:00a.m. – 5:00p.m. weekdays at the Police Academy (710 Sherman Parkway), where the 8-week course will be held on Wednesday evenings. The start date will be April 15th; classes begin at 6:00p.m. and end at 9:00p.m. Forms may also be obtained at police substations, the main desk at police headquarters at One Union Avenue and at area libraries. Completed applications must be received at the New Haven Police Academy between 9:00a.m. – 5p.m. weekdays and during the following extended hours, when Citizens’ Academy staff will be available to answer questions:

Wednesdays through Fridays, March 18-20, 25-27, April 1-3 from 9:00a.m. -7p.m. Applications received after 7pm on April 3rd will not be considered.

Applicants sought are New Haven residents from each of the City’s ten policing districts and those of all races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, ages, genders and physical abilities. Applicants must be at least 18 years old by the first day of classes, have no major felony convictions and no convictions involving domestic violence. Applications will be processed by the New Haven Police Department and potential candidates will be subject to a basic criminal history check. Each application will be considered on a case by case basis. Participants are required to commit to actively participating in all eight sessions.
